Bio:
Born 1940 Brooklyn, New York When Gerald was eight years old his family moved west to California. At sixteen his father took him for the first time to an art store. On the wall was a print of Salvador Dali’s “St John of the Cross”. Gerald, having never seen anything like this before turned to his father and said, “I want to be an artist and paint’. It was at this point in time that Gerald began his journey as an artist that would forever change his life. After six years at “Art Center College of Design” in Los Angeles, California, Gerald landed a position based in Los Angeles as “Assistant Art Director” for a fashion magazine called “California Stylist”. Gerald then became involved in designing a book that included the cover, illustrations and photography called “Choreography on Ice” which was presented at the “1984 Winter Olympics”.
Throughout this period of time Gerald stayed engaged with his “Fine Art”, working in inks, pastels, watercolors and acrylics, but always returning to his medium of choice, “oils”. For him, this was like painting with magic. At the age of forty-five, Gerald decided to forgo all other things in his life as he delved into the fine art world as a “Photo-realist”. He worked exclusively in oils, always perfecting his skills.
For twelve years Gerald had a studio in the historic “Santora Building” that was the keystone for the “downtown redevelopment of the Arts” in Santa Ana, California. Gerald directly interfaced with the top “realtor/developer”, “the City Mayer” and the “Counsel Member’s offering advice and support to this on going project. Gerald has since moved his studio and home to better dedicate his time to the never-ending discoveries of his art. Several years ago Gerald began his “sky paintings series” with emphases on clouds and the embellished color saturated lands below. Gerald has gone from Seattle to Kansas photographing, then back again to his studio where he turns the photographs into his magical paintings.

Artist Statement:
Painting is the passion; oil is the medium My need to express in my work is what happens the moment light touches the earth illuminating all. This has become a powerful and wonderful journey for me In my understanding of the earth’s delicacy and complexity, I want my paintings to convey to the viewer that even in the darkest of shadows, there is still light and thus hope.
